Hocking Hills Herping (Pic)

tspuckler May 10, 2006 05:34 PM

It was somewhat cool in southern Ohio this past weekend, but we managed to find a few herps. The only snake we came across was this bad tempered Black Rat Snake.

We saw several adult Softshell Turtles basking on the riverbanks while we were canoeing. The dinner plate-sized adults were unapproachable, although this yearling was easily caught.

As far as amphibians: Bullfrogs, Green Frogs, American Toads, Spring Peepers, Grey Treefrogs, Redback Salamanders, Two-lined Salamanders, Duskies, and this fantastic Red Salamander.

Not bad for a four day weekend with 22 high school students.

Man I always enjoy hitting the Hocking Hills for sallies. That sure looks like an ancient ruber... Nice set of pics - no springs though?!?

No Springs, I was guiding a group of students, so I was limited in the ground being covered. There were a significant number of seepage areas that would have likely had Spring Salamanders if visited after dark.

I was also a little surprised not to see any water snakes or painted turtles - but I had some pretty good finds, so I'm not complaining.
