What is the proper term for ...

sschind May 10, 2006 08:32 PM

... a cross between a common boa and an argentine boa. Since they are both Boa constrictor and differ only on the subspecific level I wouldn't think they would technically be hybrids would they. I was also under the impression that the term intergrade was reserved more for species or subspecies with ranges that overlap and breeding could occur naturally. I am considering labeling them simply as argentine X common boa crosses and leaving it at that. Also, is there a prefered order of listing. The Argentine is the male so I thought that should come first along the lines of 1.2.

Thanks

Steve

I think the best way to assign them would be "captive produced cross", while occidentalis and imperator do not intergrade in the wild naturally...they are no more a hybrid than the columbian x red tail "intergrades" that are being produced. One might say that since the above ssp. do intergrade in the wild that they would be a "natural" breeding but this occurs only in specific areas with specific populations...so the animals you are going to produce are as "natural" as someone breeding a redtail of unknown locality with a colombian also of unknown locality.

Some people who bred Diamond Carpet crosses would "justify" this (since they would never own one of those terrible hybrid animals) by stating that the cross happened in the wild, all this of course was a joke because the snakes used were of unknown origin and could be of populations hundreds of miles away from where the natural intergrade zone exists.

I don't know of any "rules" as to the order in which the names are listed but it is most common to see the more expensive of the two parent animals listed first fo some reason....how often do you see Ball X Angolan crosses or Carpet X Diamonds...I never really noticed it before until thinking over your question....

Jungle Corn - the corns are cheaper (although jungle really doesn't refer to Cal Kings very well...)
Sinacorn, same thing

The only one I know of to be reversed is corndurans, as hondos are obviously more expensive (in general, of course, depending of the morph). Don't know if Carpets or Chondros are more expensive, though.

Speaking of Jungle Corns, has ANYONE seen the results of Scott Wrights jungle corn project? I followed his theories and pictures for nearly 2 years, and in 2004 he seemed to just, stop talking about it, and I haven't seen him since... He had a very cool jungle that resembled a garter snakes pattern (male) and a VIBRANT jungle female he called "blaze phase" due to the high reds and vivid oranges (female). I never got to see the resulting offspring ... If he's not around anymore, does anyone have maybe his website or a way to contact him? Thanx for any info...

No, I haven't seen those animals lately, I do rememember that striped animal though it was an NICE snake....

As to cornduran....I just don't think hondorn has as nice a ring to it. It dosen't hold true with the "brand names" like Comas (one of the best I think) and Burticks...seems it's only with the _______ X ________ names.

Sinduran or Honoloan? Which do you prefer?

Hey Steve, maybe you know allready but Salmon Hypos crossed with Argentines are the Salmontines. People have been doing this for some time now...so your crosses will be wanted by these individuals. I also like the look of select ones from these breedings...please post pics! Andy
