About ranids...in general, how big of a tank?

Amanda E May 19, 2003 06:47 PM

Hi. I am going to raise up some tadpoles from a local pond. I would like to keep a pair of them as adults, but I'm not sure what size tank I will need.

I've looked through a ton of books and websites, but I haven't found much that states tank size.

I do know that since these types of frogs tend to be quite nervous and jumpy, the bigger the better so they don't damage their snouts.

I'm not sure what type of tadpoles I have, but I think they are probably leopard frogs. Maybe green frogs, but I doubt it.

Also, does anyone know if putting those "wallpaper" designs on the outside of the tank will keep them from thinking they can jump through the glass?

The tank needs of leopard frogs and green frogs are similar. Most green frogs get about 4 to 5 inches at their largest, leopards are similar sized. I would recommend a thirty-gallon minimum for 2 adults, but bigger is always better. Backgrounds on three sides of the tank is a good idea to prevent stress and let the frog know tht there's a wall there. both types do jump around erratically when startled, which is why a big tank is needed.
