flyer likes moths

forkit May 10, 2006 11:58 PM

i have a wild caught flying gecko whose been happy for many years. when i put crickets or worms in with him, he doesnt perk up at all. he obviously eats them, because hes full and alive, and they dissapear. but i guess he doesnt eat in front of me or in the day time

with one exception... every now and again i catch a moth off my front porch light and give it to him, and he immediately chases and eats it. he always keeps his eyes on it flying, and when it lands, he jolts at it and gets it 2nd or 3rd try usually. he does it with me staring at him and seems to know exactly how to handle them.

so my question is, are there commercially available moths for food? if not, is the worm that turns into moths available and how hard would they be to raise?

i usually only give him one every couple weeks and itd be cool to give him more

I don't know if you'll find moths comercially, but have you tried other flying insects? Seems like he gets off on the action .

what others are there? besides fruitflies...

My first thought was house flies. There are a multitude of other insects that can be had outdoors that, unless they were sprayed with insecticides, would work well. I'd try several just to keep his interest piqued. Suppose it could be time consuming, but then runnin' round in the yard chasin' bugs was never a problem with me . Just a thought.

I used to buy maggots or fly puppae. I would keep them till they morphed into flys. My day geckos would go NUTS!

Get some wax worms, I get mine from ReptileFood.com. They're pretty good as worms too. I wouldn't feed them as the only thing cos you can't gutload them and they are little fat balls, but they DO become moths after a few weeks. Very spazy moths that always gets arboreals going.

Hi, Alot of my lizards love moths ! Occasionally I will buy waxworms, and feed some to them all but you can get them to breed or cocoon and then they turn into moths. Problem is they are smaller moths.

But they LOVE them and chase them down as you said Flyer does.

It EXCITES THEM
