So, what exactly happens when...

So, what exactly happens when you get a normal colored candycane corn? Is it pretty much like a 50/50 version of a corn with black and red? Why haven't I seen any of these yet? Seems pretty decent to me...

Just something to ponder...

That would be a normal cornsnake that is HET for the candycane genes. Candycanes have "normal" patterns, just not all the "normal" colors. So if it is normal colored, then its a normal corn carrying the genes for candycane.

Oh, Ok. I was under the assumption that "Candycanes" were homozygous for a pattern morph (almost "banded" and amelanism, which together makes them almost red and white striped. I thought that if you still had the pattern gene, but not amelanism, that you could in essence have black and red "banding".

Does that mean that candycane is another form of amelanism that changes both the color AND the pattern with the same mutation?

Sorry if I confused anyone...

yes, candycanes are a form of amel....and candycanes are not all "banded" or milkphase. those are also a different mutation/het. for example, you can have a candycane: stripe, cube, motley, banded, etc.

Candy cane is a morph name coined to an amel snake that is idealy red and white. That is the amel gene at play for the colors that has been bred for that nice red/white look.
As far as the pattern, that is another gene at work. So if you want a candy cane that is banded, then you have to work with both of those genes to create the look you want. Some of this stuff takes years to accomplish, as you breed snakes, hold back selected babies, and breed them once they reach breeding age.

So to answer your question, no, the amel gene does not cause banding. That is another gene at play, just like the aztec, striped, etc. etc.

Candycane is a combination of amelanistic and Miami, with some selective breeding for better color contrast. Miami morph has red blotches but no red/yellow in the ground color. Nobody has worked out the genetics of Miami, yet. It doesn't seem to work on a straight Mendelian pattern, as far as I know.
