Non feeders

bobster May 11, 2006 07:36 AM

Hi,

I had two litters of Ecuadorians with 6 non feeders in each back at the beginning of April. I have got it down to three in each with the others hit and miss.

I have tried everything I can think of (except live) and was wondering if there are any more tips you guys have for me please?

Any help would be gratefully received as I'm getting more than a little concerned.

thanks
bobster

Been there, done that!!!

This last year I had three reluctant feeders. They went a long time (months) before I gave in and assist fed. That's where you gently pry open their mouth and insert the prey's head. If it works out, the snake then swallows on it's own. After several weeks of this, the three did pretty much get the idea and are now feeding on their own. One is doing very well, one is doing pretty good and the third is still not feeding real well but is feeding. As they have grown, so has their appetite.

I guess these three are less intelligent than the typical snake (as if that's possible) and had to be trained to eat.

First though, I would definately try live.

Thanks!

I have tried assist feeding all of them. the six that are ok now have had 2 or 3 assists and are now striking on their own.

the others are having none of it! they won't take assist.

I guess I'll have to try live on those guys. Not going to give up on them!! They happen to be the prettiest of all of them too.

Bobster,
....I would try live and if that does not work I would try lizard scenting or possibly even offering small lizards rather than rodents.

Hi Jeff,

will see what i can do re live.

Any suggestions as to what lizards to try scenting with? I have tried Jewelled Lacerta skin to no avail. The only other lizards I have are day geckos and i don't think they'd stand up too well to having mice rubbed on them!
