then there was that old guy ( not me this time ) that was walking naked just before Peppers Hill on the east side off of the road while Shawn Devero and I was down and others saw him as well. Man, I wonder how many snakes we missed crossing as our attention was on the naked guy. LOL !

Hey what ever happened to the Donkey Lady? Or more specifically the lady on the Donkey. I shoulda taken her portrait!

Forky

mchambers May 11, 2006 01:21 PM

For one thing Forky, she wouldn't allow the picture taking if she knew it or saw it. ( gads, why do I know about all of these things and I don't even live down there ? ). While she granted a interview and picture of the photographer and author of a couple of years ago book, she lit out after that. She wanted only one thing for the interview and that was a pack of cigs. Unknowing to many peoples thoughts and mine for years, she wasn't crazy and she wasn't without funds. She just didn't like people and while she did have a place to stay ( these is weird > an abandon car someplace ), she liked the solitude of area and what she did. Yes, she was eccentric as hell but just liked her lifestyle of being in the wild. Several people of the Bend and more so of Lajitas tried to have her committed, But the specialist found nothing really wrong with her so she was released and found to be completely sane. Some of my knowledge came from that book and various people around Terlingua where she was kind of a icon of freedom. LOL ! Furthermore she must of had guts and determination not to mention being HARD to do what she did in her nomadic lifestyle of making trips and as you remember at night times , from points of Study Butte to Redford with her donkey sometimes riding, sometimes in tow by walking !

is that the same lady ive seen around alpine?

mchambers May 11, 2006 02:32 PM

you mean Alpine proper or outside city limits ? Could be. She use to wear a sombrero, and over sarape and or a over the shoulder Mexican blanket, Her donkey had a ornamental Mexican saddle. She slept in the heat of days under her Mexican blanket occasionally moving to other locations. The only thing that you would see sometimes when she was sitting up in her blanket was a puff of smoke from her non-filtered camel cigs. This was the advertised what many people knew they wasn't looking at just a trash heap or something that had a donkey next to it . LOL ! Several places carried her brand of camel for just about her only down in the Bend. Unknown to many, I approached her one time before I knew who she was thinking she was some kind of victim of something or just a wandering sole. Well she WAS a wandering sole but I asked her if she was okay and the only words from her mouth was " matches " and it wasn't in a questionable from. I did have matches and while she didn't want to take them from my hand, I laid them down in font of her while she peaked out of her blanket with one eye on me. I drove off.

I know somebody that swears he saw her in El Paso with her donkey, that was actually a shetland pony. I bet she doesn't care about the price of GAS.

mchambers May 12, 2006 03:09 PM

something about a child's death and maybe more than one down through the years. This was what I was told by a person that had visited him several years ago but maybe it was something of a new wife and NEW child instead. Evidently he is not been able to be find in Alpine any more or hasn't for the past several years. Another name comes to mind of Mike Fortner living in and around Alpine. I wonder what happened to him ?

I think I miss Mike, he was entertaining.... Maybe one year he will get back and make another appearance out west?

To this day he is the only pedestrian I have tried to run over (well not tried, it was an accident on a field studies in Mexico, but still funny)

I was run off of Juno back in 94... I stopped to talk to a local collector there and I turned off my flashlight in the dark to keep the bugs at bay.... Well he must have mistaken that for something else and grabbed my crotch in the dark.

I was stunned and speachless at this... Never thought I would have to react to such a thing in my life.

I left and hunted somewhere else the rest of that summer..

LBenton May 13, 2006 05:26 PM

It would seem that we were after different types of snakes that night.

And we both left empty handed.....

Anybody else have any good stories?

bobassetto May 14, 2006 12:30 PM

oh...there's plenty......the wooden blair's on wheels being drug 'cross rt 90 by someone with a fishin' rod....this guy did the same thing with dor blair's....you're cruisin'....look up there's a BLAIR'S......as you leap from the car and scamper up to ....it freakin' takes OFF.....'course you only chase it a short way....you realize WTF is happenin' no snake crawls that fast in a straight line...........

LBenton May 14, 2006 02:49 PM

They had a little wooden snake with wheels on it on pandale dirt... I think they were out there to clown around and if they found a snake it would have been incidental.

I just wish I could remember now who it was that had that set up.
