Please Help, Old Age?

questionable May 11, 2006 10:57 AM

Hello,

I haven't visited this site in about 5 years. I even had to create a new log in as as forgot the old one.

I am back because I need your help. I have a beardie about 5 years old. I came home last night and noticed her sleeping w/her mouth slightly opened. I picked her up and she was motionless. She is still breathing, but very weak. Her eyes and the two sides of the top of her head are sunken in. I gave her a warm bath last night. This morning she opened her eyes and lapped some water. I forced fed her some meal worm guts mixed w/a little calcium powder using a syringe. She is still very weak. I feel so bad for her. She has UVB and heat lamps. Temps are good. She has been eating pellets and gets Calcium w/D3 and Herpivite vitamits as recommended. Is there anything else I can do? Has she come close to the end because of her age? Any advise is appriciated. Thank you in advanced.

Greg

Get your dragon to an experienced reptile vet right away. Five is young - there's something wrong with her. My dragon's over 9, and still feisty as ever.

Please let us know what the vet says, and how your dragon is doing. Sounds like you really care for this dragon, and take good care of it. Praying your dragon is fine.

Coming on that quick, with fat pads collapsed and also the eyes sunken in I would first suspect it is hormonal and related to reproduction. Like an egg stasis or egg binding (two diferent thing)

Have your vet run a WBC and RBC to see if one is elevated and/or the other is low. If it is that will tell him what the problem is and he needs to address those symptoms while you and him decide what is the base problem and what to do about it.

We have found out the last several months that egg statis in dragons over 4 years old is not that rare in them, comes on very fast with symptoms that you describe, just most people and vets donot think of it since they can not see or feel eggs.

I'm sad to say that my beardie passed on Friday 05/12. She was egg binded and was too weak to pass the eggs. We did all we could.

Thanks for letting us know. So sorry to hear about your dragon. Once you're done mourning her, please consider getting another dragon. You sound like the kind of concerned, caring owner we need more of in this hobby.
