If you want to get him onto rodents, you may want to consider catching yourself a pet pacific treefrog too. I've found that treefrogs are great for getting garters to accept rodents. If your snake doesn't take the the mouse you offer, rub it on the treefrog and reoffer it. Sometimes it helps to use a pre-killed mouse so that you can wash off the mouse scent before rubbing it on the frog. I've also had success with live frog scented pinkies.
