Growth Rate - Crickets vs. Pellets

R_AK47 May 11, 2006 06:34 PM

Hello, has anyone here done a study or observed themselves the differences in growth rate that hatchling bearded dragons have when fed different foods? Specifically, feeding an all pellet/commercial diet as opposed to an all insect/cricket diet? I am currently feeding my daughter's hatchling both commercial food (RepCal pellets and Nature Zone bites) and crickets, about half and half. The commercial diets are much more convenient to feed and I would prefer to switch entirely to them, but want to maximize the growth of the lizard while its still young. Any thoughts? The lizard is only a couple months old.

i have not heard of a study for this but i know breeders who swear on pellets and do not feed crickets to them at all and the beardies are just fine. crickets are actually 90% water from what i have read. i do feed crickets but am in the process to switching to roaches. they are much better for the bearded. 2-4 full grown roaches are as good as 20-30 crickets. i do give my babies pellets at early ages so they will eat them as they get older. starting older dragons on pellets is harder to get them to eat them. you can however put them on top of their salads and they will eat them that way. my dragons are funny and only eat the red yellow and green pellets. they are picky.
