had to force feed

stevet2 May 11, 2006 08:11 PM

Hey ya'll,
Wel I had to break down and take my YT to the vet. He being the one that had not eaten in over 4 months and I have gotten some great advice form you guys and tried everything, but he would not eat.

the doc induced urination, took a specimen and found a small amount of fluke.

so now we are doing the panacure, flagyl and Baytril(shots I have to give him eod). He tube fed him some pseudo food concoction and I have to force feed him a small mouse 2x's a week.

Well I just had my first experience with the force-feeding and I accomplished it,but it took over 10 minutes and I know the poor guy was wiped out and relieved it was over. He was pretty cooperative for a 7ft Cribos. I used a small spatula, but that was kindof cumbersome and a juggling act of sorts..

anybody have some suggestions or experiences force feeding their charges?

thanks as always..

Use your' drivers liscence, or atm/credit card. Use a piece of fine grade sand paper, or the wife's emery board/nail board to smooth down the sharp edge. Place the food item, with the head at the edge of the card. Slide the card into the snake's mouth, and he should open. Then slide it over until the head of the rodent is in the snake's mouth. Then with some practice you will learn to let the card fall away while guiding the rodent down. Sometimes they will go ahead and swallow. Sometimes you'll have to keep it going. It helps if the rodent is wet. Good luck!!!
