Do Bull Frogs Feign Death?

SlitheringHerps May 12, 2006 12:23 AM

I went out this evening to collect a few toads for my hogs and I came across a pretty good sized bull frog. I got the drop on it and captured it. But when I placed it in the container it stayed still so I shook the container a bit but it didnt move. I then opened the container and picked it up and it was limp as a noodle. So I placed it back in the container and kind of rolled it onto its side and messed with its legs a little to get a response but it just layed there. I then started to get worried thinking I may have stunned it or even worse killed it. So I started to think about all the ways I could of injured it during the capture but nothing made sense because I just grabbed it up between the legs and abdomen. I then was getting ready to seal the container when it SPRUNG out of it into the yard and out of sight. Any thoughts?

(Btw I was collecting the bull frog to show it to a couple of people back in the house then putting back in the yard.)

There's a pretty big disparity between those two statements. 1 bullfrog = concern, dozens of toads = no concern? Hognoses can be fed exclusively mice without any problems, and you won't be pulling toads out of the wild to support your pets.

I would have felt really bad if I were to kill that bull frog just so I could share it with others. Believe me, I would love to just run down to the local pet store to pick up rodents for all my hogs! But the fact of the matter is I have only switched over two and im not going to let the other ones starve because they are refusing rodents.
