What is the best way to set up a "Bioactive" substrate? I have mixed ground coconut, peat moss, play sand, and fired clay (which I found as unscented cat litter with carbon). None of this stuff seems to hold moisture for very long.
After a month and a half of spot cleaning and stirring there is no foul odor, yet it doesn't feel quite right. It sticks to the snakes and it's not supposed to.
I added orchid moss to the mix in an experimental tank that houses a green anole and a green tree frog, and that seems to be holding the moisture quite nicely now.
