I am searching to purchase 4 acrylic cages for my chondros. What is the best heat source to get. I hear lots of things about heat tape. How do you control for day time/night time changes. Also if someone could post where I can find these products. Thanks, Andrew

We just built first acrylic enclosure, its clear with a black back, that measures 24"X 24"X 24" for our first GTP and installed a Radiant Heat panel complete with their Thermostat, it was pricy, but we've tested it and it worked like a charm.....Now all we need is GTP, would like a female Sarong or Jaya...

Flexwatt heat tape is a good source of heat for racks but I would not use it for heating enclosures. Many keepers use Pro Heat radiant panels. I will add their link at the bottom. They are expensive but well worth the money. If you are looking at getting your acrylics from Md Custom Cages (will add that link also), Paul can tell you more about them and even install them for you. Whatever you use, you will need a quality thermostat and many offer night drop capabilities. Big Apple offers a proportional unit with built in night drop and I hear that Spyder Robotics is releasing a Herpstat ND in a few weeks. Herpstats are very nice. Their basic unit has a night drop optional cable but the Herpstat II has it built in. I will add links for all of this.

Can you control multiple enclosures from one thermostat though? Or do you have to get individual ones?

MegF May 12, 2006 09:42 AM

The Herpstat that I use is capable of maintaining multiple units, but they have to be the same size of course. I unfortunately had two completely different sized enclosures so I needed two for that. I had a malfunction (or thought I did-don't plug the thermostats into a surge protector) and Dion offered to check them over on his board and put in the latest chip for free. I ended up buying yet another Herpstat (ready for that next chondro) and shipping him each one back. Worked perfectly! He's really great.

Who did you buy this from?

bsharrah May 12, 2006 02:24 PM

You can buy them directly from Spyder Robotics using the link I posted.

I got my first one from MG Reptiles, the others directly from Spyder. Dion at Spyder is great to do business with.

also here is this pic.

Jarkko May 16, 2006 02:09 PM

Wow, that's a killer setup you have there. Those are fake plants right?

What did the whole setup...cages, heating, therms., etc. run you for both?

lajunglist May 16, 2006 04:34 PM

Jarkko:

Thank you for the comp.

I would say that rounding to the nearest dollar i must off spend about $500 on each, call me crazy but i have about 3 different temp readings and 2 hydrometer readings that i could check for each cage at any time.

The plants are fake and sorry about the link I could swear that I had checked it before I linked it but here is the url.

Wait the site is down, try it latter.

www.mdcustom.com

i recommend that you run each cage independently.

Jarkko May 17, 2006 07:28 AM

What about just the cage? I've been lookin all over the net...I am absolutely amazed at what people charge or a cage.

I just sent an inquiry to a guy who wants to charge $5,500.00 for 4 cages.!! I almost fell out of my chair laughing. I can't people actually spend that kind of money on this stuff. It's not that hard to build a cage yourself...deff. not worth paying someone even remotely close to a grand for a couple. That's just my opinion. I'm just too damn lazy to get around to buildin' one myself.

I really like your cages though...are they around that $300-500 range like everyone else charges?

MegF May 17, 2006 07:37 AM

There's Barr's cages, PVC cages, and Vision. I have a vision cage, but I think I'm going to build a cage from a Dresser like I saw in Reptiles magazine. The only difference is that I'm going to make sliding door instead of one big opening door. I like to be able to open the door on the opposite side of the snake if she's standing ready at the door in the evening. Save's a face strike

Hey Meg, How are you?

Is Oscar from Pet adventure!

I have been looking around for a dresser that nobody wants so that I could try my skills on the same project as the one in the reptiles magazine, just for kicks.

i told my girl I was going to use the one we just got and she wasn't as exited as I was. lol

Jarkko:

As far as the both of the cage they are no were close to 300 to 500. i got both from Paul August for about $200 each give and take with some of my own request on were I would like some cuts for the heat and the probes.(the size of my cages are 12x12x12)

But check out the site is back up and i put the info on the bottom in case.

I'm doing great Oscar! We'll have to trade pictures of our finished products when we finally find a suitable dresser to tear apart. How is your baby doing? Finally healthy?

Ok, thanks. I have been checking out that site and finally seem to have found reasonable prices. I just came across 4 chondros so I gotta buy 4 which isn't gonna be too expensive!! I desperately need to though..I have them in aquariums and need to get new cages so I can maintain humidity. Thanks, again.

Jarkko May 16, 2006 02:13 PM

By the way, I clicked on the link for the cages and it brings me to some website that has nothing to do w/ cages. Any help?
