Crocodylus siamensis in Rainforest

mrcota May 12, 2006 10:19 AM

Just came back from a wonderful time in the protected primary rainforests of eastern Thailand. One of the target species that I went after to see was Crocodylus siamensis, since there are two rumored to live there. I found three! A male, a female and a hatchling. The female and hatchling escaped out of view before I could get a picture, but I was able to find the male ca. 1km away from the others, basking unaware of my presence, well, for at least one shot.

Cheers,
Michael

Congratulations, Mike! Great shot - wished to see these crocs sometimes in the wild in Thailand. Was it in Khao Yai NP?

Ralf,

Yes, it was in Khao Yai National Park. There are reportedly some more to the east in Thap Lan National Park. Last year, during the rainy season, there were also some reportedly killed by fishermen in Prachin Buri, according to the Bangkok Post.

Here is where the female was basking when I startled her (mutually startled each other). I believe this was the nesting site. There was a lot of Varanus salvator activity there.

Cheers,
Michael
