Sitting in water dish for the first time

dan_and_tricia May 12, 2006 06:25 PM

Hi,

After doing some research and reading 2 books, we recently purchased a young Leopard Gecko. We have had him for about a month. Everything has been just fine. He even went through his first very clean and trouble-free shedding. His home has both a moist and dry hide. The moist hide on the warm side of the tank. His dry hide is in the middle of the tank. He does not have a hide on the cool side of the tank.

Today, I can home from work and he was sitting inside his water dish. He looks great, appearance-wise. Very alert and stuff. I was just wondering if this somehow may indicate a potential health or environmental problem.. Anyone?

The water bowl is on the cool side of the terrarium and there was very litte water in it at the time. (I usually wash and refill it at night time at feeding time)

I did notice that a streak of bright sun was peering in through a window from outside right into the bowl. I am wondering if he was simply catching some natural rays. Any feedback or input would be much appreciated.

Hey guys,
I would not worry about it.... He might be going into shed and is gathering a little extra humidity or maybe it just felt like sitting in the dish or it could have been thermoregulating or....... There are many reasons why they would do that.... It is totaly natural behavior.... So again, dont worry about it but all new gecko parents worry.... LOL

How about some pics???

Pics would be cool!!

Also i would recomend that you provide him with 2 hides on the warm side and one on the cool so that he can feel safe regualting his temps during the day and night.
IMO opinion the problem with only having a humid hide on the warm side is if he needs to heat up for digestion etc and doesnt really want to be in the humid hide he has no where to go to be stress free and may choose to sit in his dry hide in the middle of the tank and not get the proper amount of heat to digest or just chill. In a way he can end up in a situation where he is puting comfort over safety, geting to cold, wanting to be warm but getting to much humidity etc.
Just my opinions! Good luck!
