TX Press: Snake Scare Frightens Family

May 12, 2006 09:30 PM

WOAI (San Antonio, Texas) 10 May 06 Snake Scare Frightens Family (Walker Robinson)
A six-foot snake was causing big problems in one north side neighborhood Tuesday, frightening families on Champions Way in Stone Oak, News 4 WOAI learned.
Linda Wallace told News 4 WOAI the snake almost attacked her.
“My daughter said to close the door,” Wallace said. “When I turned around, the head was extending into the house.”
The snake quickly made it way from the house to a hiding spot in the back yard, Wallace said.
“He jumped down, went into the rocks, and wrapped itself around the pool unit,” Wallace said. That's when she called Animal Control.
A police officer arrived first and determined Wallace's intruder was a non-venomous Texas Rat snake.
A second officer came to the home, and he helped catch the snake.
“These do bite, but they are not venomous,” the officer told News 4 WOAI about the snake. “They just cause little scrapes on the skin.”
The Texas Rat snake feeds primarily on rodents, according to snake experts. If you are bitten by their small sharp teeth, just wash the area with anti-bacterial soap, experts said.

That actually turned out well. A knowledgeable police officer removed the snake without hurting it and actually gave good advice about how little danger it actually represented.

Hooray for the SAPD for once!

I agree. Nothing beats a happy ending. I remember watching an episode of cops where a woman was frightened by an extremely large black ratsnake. The cops were called and after 2 officers maced the snake repeatedly a 3rd officer was called. I remember him saying specifically "That is just a blacksnake!" And then proceded to club it to death..... That made me extremely upset!

Slow news day here in San Antonio!! I watched the video and it was hilarious to hear the lady scream as the snake was slowly crawling out of the AC unit to "attack her". Those snakes are really common around here. I actually saw a DOR one today on a high traffic road in a fairly developed area.
