Just a pointless question...

beardie_br0z Jul 30, 2003 10:00 PM

Im most likely going to breed my 2 beardies soon..my male is about 409grams and is just about 18months old and my female is probally about 20months old..my brother wouldnt weigh her today but she is big enough to breed. The male is a red and the female is a normal.. Im just curious because i never saw a picture of this cross..What will the babys look like and what do they sell for? sorry if ur not allowed to post prices but im just curious..its not for selling purposes.

Thanks,
Joey

Well it depends on how red the one is. usually when you cross normals to colored animals it browns trhe color out. A lot of times you get an animal that has a brownis tone with colorfull highlights. Then again you just never know. Ive seen same parent clutches hatch out completly different and in the same season too. Prices vary on individual dragons so its too hard to say.

It's like asking what a baby would look like if Mike and Julie had one. You can't say for sure until they have it.

You can get a whole mix of colors from the same parents. Many are sold as normal because there isn't enough color to sell them as something else, but they may have the genetics to produce more color. Your red may have other colors that might turn up in the babies. You really can't set a blanket price for them because of the wide range of colors that can show up from the same parents.
Just an example, another member here had a dragon that was a brother of my Woodrow (their dragon died, but anyway). The two looked a like only in that they were both dragons. Their dragon looked more like one of the ones I have from another line.

True, because thats what my "normals" are... they come from my other lines, but are not showing a lot of color as babies

If your asking if you can make money off of that cross then NO. You will probably lose between $300-$600 dollars breeding them the first year. After that you will only lose about $200 per year because you will have some of the equiptment already. Normals crossed with anything sell for around $30 if you try REALLY hard. You will probably only get $20, and that is with lots of advertising(which costs a lot of money too). This is a part time hobby for the rich!

Ive seen plenty of baby plain jane normals go for 50 and higher on the classifieds. But the average is around 40. And even if you have a little color in them a lot of people cant afford really expensive color dragons, but the red x normals are a heck of a lot cheaper. so a lot of people get those because they can afford them. Around here plain normals go for 70-90 depending on which store you go to. I know a lot of people would never sell to a pet store, but if you know the people and trust them its a good way to get your name known in the area. Ive sold normal dragons to petstores in the past for 40 each. If you go to a reptile show and get a table you can range the price from 35-75 depending on size and color. Just my 2 cents.

That is a correct price. Sometimes you can find someone to pay that for a normal...and yes, you see the adds for normals in the kingsnake classifieds for $40-50 dollars, but you keep seeing those same adds over and over because they don't sell. Eventually the person will give up and drop the price a lot, and finally the ad will disappear. Also, I don't sell to pet stores anymore, but I do know what they pay. Most pet stores in my area pay $10-15 for hatchlings 4-8 weeks old. They then resale the dragons for $35-40. You really can not even sell normal dragons over the internet unless you are selling a group of them, because no one will pay as much for shipping as they did for the lizard in the first place. They can just go to the pet store, and not worry about shipping.

Here are some ads from people that have given up their high prices, and just want out because they are going through 1000 crickets a day to feed them (in other words, it costs $50 a week to feed 20 6 week old dragons).

I don't agree. I have sold some babies with "normal" in the mix for higher amounts than those you stated. Also Pet stores around here pay anywhere from $20 - $30 and resell them for $59.99

I guess it all depends on location, location, location like always

Different areas have different prices. Normal dragons go for 70-90 here. I dont sell to pet stores anymore either, but last season I was getting 40 at the pet stores and 35 to the wholesalers.

As recently as a year ago beardies cost 79.99 in petstores here as well, but the beardie supply is evidently catching up to the demand, because even petco and petsmart are now 39.99 here, and they are always the MOST inflated in prices.

nathan23 Jul 31, 2003 05:52 PM

Lucky you! well lucky if you see one you like. Not so lucky if you seel to pet stores.

They can turn out like anything...... might get some with red, might get some that look normal. You can answer the price thing till you actually see that babies, etc
