Tail wagging

scfisher May 12, 2006 11:51 PM

This afternoon, I checked up on my son's Dumeril. He is not quite two years old. He was buried in the aspen, but then he raised up his tail and started wagging it. He was moving the last 2-3" of his body, and also bending the very tip of the tail. All without moving the rest of his body. I've never seen him do that before.

No offence Pythonis, but your post wasn't very helpful, and seemed flippant and a bit sarcastic, maybe I took it the wrong way though. I think scfisher was looking more for an explination for the Dums behaviour.

Not helpful, but very funny.

Yea, I guess I've been a little jaded lately by some of the posts I've seen on some of the forums on here where the person doesn't completely read the post and/or responds rudely.

No, this has never happened to me, I've only had great experiences with people on here. I just feel bad for other people that have come on here looking for help and get treated that way.

Sorry.

It sounds like Caudal Luring, they wiggle their tail around making it look like a worm or something to attract potential prey. I don't believe I read anything about Dums doing it, nor have I seen it in mine, but there are alot of snakes out their that do that and it is perfectly normal.

As long as the snake seems healthy and isn't exhibiting any other strange behaviours like star gazing, he's probably fine.

The above is just my opinion, someone else with more experience my be able to help more.

I have seen it several times, and sometimes it seems to be Caudal Luring, and other times it seems to be an excitement response. I'll see it most often in young Dumerils, but have seen it a few times with older animals. I wouldn't recommend reaching in on your Dumerils while he's doing this-LOL! Sometimes you can trigger this reaction by changing up the prey item, which leads to the excitement response. Other times, they're just hungry and simply walking by the cage can trigger the luring. Maybe he was just waving at you though, lol. Take care

Paul
