Malpolon Moilensis

SSR May 13, 2006 12:00 AM

I have just purchased a couple of these little guys(also known as the Arabian Monpellier and Egyptian False Cobras) and have a couple questions on them. I have done research after research after research and I am having a hard time finding info on these little beauties. I know how I am supposed to house them and all but I was wondering if ya'll had any extra info you could give me. Like stuff you learned from personal experience. Also have any of you ever been bit and if so what kind of reactions did you have(if any at all)? Do they tame down at all? How did you like them? And last, Has anyone tryed to breed them, if so I would like to know your techniques? I will post pics when they arrive Tues. Any and all info is appriciated and is wanted. Thanks. SSR.

There is nothing I hate more then a person buying a snake or any animal for that matter and not doing research and relizing what they are getting themselves into. Because of people like that we have such strict reptile and animal laws and they are ruining it for everyone. Not doing research is totally unacceptable and with the internet is super easy to do. There is just no excuse for that!!!

Actually they are Malpolon monspessulana. I have kept them before and yes...apparently got one of the snakes from the same shipment your dealer did, and imediatly keyed it out. Note particularly the high brow ridge. Also the markings on the face. Very different from moilensis.

The info on the web is very poor when it comes to these.

Care is easy. Mine took mice with no problem. While they do hiss impressively they calm with careful handling. Do not try to trap the head, just let it run through your hands. Like any racer they are nervous but give it time and it will be ok.

Thanks for the correction. I have not recieved them yet, I am getting them on Tues. so I haven't had the chance to look at the markings but I will definantly check that out when they get here. Have you ever been bit by this species and did you have any reaction to the venom? I appriciate the info. SSR

The only meaningful bites I have recieved from this species were from a 2.5" juv. It had no effect on me, but I am very resistant to venoms.

In any case, unless it was a protracted bite from a large specimen I would just brush it off as a bandade bite (unless you have a sensitivity to venoms).

However, My experience as said above is that they do calm and tend to bluff rather than bite.

The one I am getting is about the same size so thanks. I appriciate the info. I have never been bit by a venomous reptile, I have owned other rear fanged snakes but never have gotten bit. I have a pretty high tolerence to everything else so( I know I still need to use caution due to the fact I don't know). The one I am getting is not supposed to be to quick to bite just more of a runner. Thanks for everything. SSR

That's pretty typical for this species. Glad to help.

Cool snakes. I've been looking for some Malpolon to breed but have had trouble finding them. I saw one listed in the classified recently, but only one. Good luck with yours!

It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. All year long the grasshopper stored up acorns for winter, while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched tv. And then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus stole all his acorns, and he got a race car. Is any of this sinking in?

I have had mine since the May 22 and wow, hissing is incredible. Im very please but am thinking about a Arabian False Cobra which would be the malpolon moilensis. I got mine from a recent add on here. So far I havent handled much because I am wait for the 1 week thing lol, but yeah, it seems pretty cool but I am trying to find a Arabian False Cobra meaning I would sell this snake. (its on faunas classifieds)
