HEAT TAPE, a few questions guys

SNAKEHIPS May 13, 2006 01:16 PM

I bought a few strips of heat tape for my snake set ups. They are pre-cut and wired.I have a temperature gun to monitor temperature, I also got a thermostat to control temperature, I am not sure how to connect the thermostat to regulate temperature, what the hell do I do with it? I am just staring at it with a blank face, lol.

also is there any way to connect two strips that are already cut to make one larger strip? or am I dicing with death on that one?

Also will I need a thermostat for each seperate strip if i cant join them?

thanks boys n girls

The installation of heat strips is very simple. It only requires a basic level of electrical understanding. If you have doubts on what is needs. Then that indicates you seek advice of a electrician.

Please understand, the reason you should seek advice or hire someone is, Heat strips can be very dangerous. I have seen several snake rooms burn down because of improperly installed heat strips. I have also seen lots of fried snakes.

A reostat is not little help as it does not prevent the strips burning up. A limiting thermostat does. You can set the thermostat at say, 95F and if the temp goes above that, it will turn off all electricity.

The nature of heat strips is to raise the ambient temps. IF the temps are hot, it will make it hotter. If they are really hot, they will raise the temps until it catches fire. Never enclose heat strips and never insulate them. Good luck

I think that is the best way to go, i would not have attempted to do it myself, I will call someone in so I can rest assured, thanks for getting back to me with good sound advice.
