Glass Tank Top

MissMiniZoo May 13, 2006 03:15 PM

I've been looking into getting a pair of dart frogs. I'm not sure what species yet, but really like D. Azureus. My question is what do most people use for the top of the aquarium? I know it needs to hold in moisture. I've seen all glass tops, but if you have live plants, the UV rays from your light source cannot penetrate the glass, correct? Or do plants do okay with light through the glass?

You tank, including plants, will do great with glass tops on em.. and it helps keep in humidity and fruit flies..

As Tim said, the plants will do perfectly well without UV, although you will probably have to use some sort of broad spectrum fluorescent or other plant lighting for them. The frogs won't need any UV as long as you are dusting their food with a calcium/vitamin supplement that contains D3.

All of my tops are hinged glass lids. If you use the type that has the plastic flap in the rear portion, be sure to tape this down, as the frogs may be able to lift this and escape.

A pair of D. azureus would be a great choice, although they remain a bit expensive for a first experience with darts.
