Forsteins Tortoise?

spider_girl May 13, 2006 06:10 PM

I have been trying to do some research on the Forsteins Tortoise, but have not been able to find much info. I would be very interested in obtaining a pair of these beautiful tortoises, but want to find out what I can about there habits first.

Has anyone had experience with these guys? Or know where I can find some info? (ie: temps, habitat, breeding info, diet, etc.) I know they come from Indonesia are Indotestudo forsteni, but that is about it.

Thanks everyone!

Hi. The habits and requirements of I. forsteni are very similar to I. elongata. Actually the two species occur together in some areas of Malaysia if I am not mistaken. They occur in forested, hilly areas and seem to like cooler, damper habitats than tortoises such as Leopards or Spurred Tortoises. If kept somewhat similar to Redfoots, they would probably do well. I have not kept this species for many years, but have had and bred the closely related Indian Travancore Tortoises (i. travancorica) which occur in mountainous, forested areas of India.

Once the animals are established they are pretty hardy. Nighttime low temps should not drop below 60F. They prefer temps in the low 80s. Humidity should be high and lighting should be dim. Plenty of hiding places should be available.
Diet should consist of soft ripe fruits, some leafy greens, some animal protien, and mushrooms.
These tortoises do not alawys get along well together and are best housed by themselves.
It would be best to purchase a cb animal when you can find one.
