water instead of perlite or vermiculite

XtremeXteriors May 14, 2006 02:38 AM

if I put one of those lighting grate covers like the ones i see people putting over perlite or vermiculite, on feet so to say. and it was about 2-3" off the incubation container floor could I just use water in the bottom as long as the eggs or snakes cant when hatched, get down into it. and if i used water wouldnt that also act like a heat sink to help with temperature recovery when opened besides always visually seeing your water level

Yes, it will work. I use a very similar setup but with perlite and water. The perlite keeps the water from splashing, and helps create mass. I hope this helps its late! If you would like a pic of my egg boxes let me know.

wow cool, how many times have you used that method and does the water act like a heatsink

JDouglas May 14, 2006 06:06 PM

I have used this method several times for colubrid and carpet python eggs with excellent results. This is my first time using it with ball eggs. It has been five weeks and the ball eggs in the pic look great!

did the pipe come precut or did you have to cut it to length

JDouglas May 14, 2006 06:17 PM

It comes precut. It is a connector piece and the cost was 38 cents each at Menard's. Any home improvement store will have these.
