Desert Iguana

SandmanDI May 14, 2006 09:58 AM

Hi all I am still pretty new here. I have a young DI that I found at work about two weeks ago. He seems to be doing ok, eating crickets like crazy!!! He is also eating greens. I was wondering if anyone had any helpful hints on taming WC lizards. This is my first so I don't really know what to do other than try to hold him. Any help would be much appreciated. Right now I am just having to chase him around the cage until I catch him then I am just holding him in his cage for a while because I don't want him to get a way from me. I want something that will be halfway enjoyably for him and for me. Thanks again!!

Logan,
Welcome to the world of Desert Iguanas, they are awesome animals! The fact that your animal is fairly young is good in terms of getting him to "calm down". Since your animal is still fairly new, I would probably try not to handle him much yet. As far as taming the wild beast, I have found that bribery is the key! Mine LOVE dandelion flowers, bananas, and Hibiscus. I have had great success in getting them to be more social by offering them these items. Although, none of mine will allow to be easily picked up, they calm down almost immediately once they are finally caught. In my experiences, they don’t take to handling very well, but that is something I am still working on with mine. I currently have a pair that I got as long term captives and have had no problems at all. I would try and get a fecal to a vet if he’s a freshly caught animal, being small and stressed, parasites can really take there toll fast. I would also watch for any weight loss, this seems to be the first sign of trouble. Also, since you’re in the area, try to feed him creosote. It is a favorite food and will more than likely aid you in acclimating your lizard. Good luck and I hope this helps!

is to just leave him be. Feed him everyday and put him in a well travelled area where he can get used to people. He will eventually come around and learn to somewhat trust you.
