Assisted Hatching

Dann May 14, 2006 10:16 AM

Just wondering what the Pros and Cons are of slitting Eastern eggs after the first one emerges. I have tried to rationalize that some Eastern Eggs due to the thick shell may need that added help to emerge. I would hate to have one Eastern dead in egg because it was just not able to cut its way out.

This being my first clutch of Eastern eggs I would appreciate any knowledge from those of you who have successfully hatched Eastern eggs.

To slit or not to slit?

Dann

Personally, I avoid slitting eggs myself. I have known a few breeders who have done so, with mixed results, so I believe it is a judgement call. If you have maintained proper moisture within your incubation box, the hatchlings should not have any difficulties pipping.
Avoid assisting any from the egg, that have already made slits, as most will spend two-three, sometimes up to four, days within the eggs after pipping. Allowing them to emerge on their own will allow them to absorb a great deal more yolk, which will prove beneficial when the time comes to start feeding them, as many can take a while to start...

good luck,

Jeff

If you take sharp fingernail scissors and pierce the egg then lift the egg surface with the point you can cut without cutting blood vessels. I actualy open rouns holes but I make sure the eggs are ready. I only do it if some are already hatching.

Thank you both for your views on slitting.

I will watch the eggs very closely next month.

Dan.
