adam_d Jul 30, 2003 10:55 PM

hey guys n gals

well heres the deal,i really really wanna get a ball python, they look so cool and are a smaller kind of snake(well, smaller then the boa's).the only problem is that im 14 so im obviously living with my parents, they say i cant get one.they arent informed or know anything about them,so could you give some useful info that i could tell them so i can get one of these guys?how big do they get, what do they eat(rats?),are they a good beginner snake, and what manience do they require as far as caging and heating goes.i have a leopard gecko so i know where to get the supplies and all of that good stuff.also, would you get a ball python over a columbian red taile boa, this is my first snake, keep that in mind.thanks

Ball pythons usually grow to 'bout 3 or 4 feet, sometimes get bigger then 5 feet though.... I tell my friends my snake is like a dog, but cooler... I also had a hard time deciding on whether i wanted a redtailed columbian boa or a ball python... I decided on the ball python... !!GOOD DECISION!!! fairly easy to care for. I feed mine frozen/ thawed mice.... He also has a heatpad u attach under the aquarium, a clip lamp... and a heating bulb... its 50 watts... 34 gallon aquarium. So long as you are responsible enough to clean out the aquarium and water regulary, provide hiding places for him, and can feed him at least 2 mice a week, there shouldnt be a problem... However your snake may get parasites.. and i dunno if ur folks would want to pay for the vet bill... Good luck....

just thought I would post something I read on here once about keeping mice in the freezer. I used it on my hubby when i told him about the frozen mice being cheaper and easier in the long run, and he shut up right away. I think it goes like this..
when they say... EEKKK.. your not keeping mice in my freezer, casually say.. Oh I'm sorry maybe I should have called 'em pig or cow.

I dont remember who said it or exactly how it was worded, but its close and you get the point.

Disclaimer.. I'm married, hubby can't ground me, so if mom grounds you for a week for getting smart with her, dont blame me okay..

Just thought I'd share..

as the mother of a underaged BP owner, I can and will tell you this.

*BP is neater, and cleaner than a dog,

*My daughter was bvit by her BP before she even bought it, and it is turning out to be a sweet animal, and the bite made her jump, but she says it bairly hurt (like a pricker bush)

*food is kept in the fridge, if U do not want to eat it, do not eat it, my kids do not eat the half used can of catfood, or the tub of worms, or the mice on Ice (nor do I)

*any animal that poops every 3 weeks is much higher on my choice list than one that needs to be walked 4x a day

*she has read up on all aspects of BP care (books and internet), and has bought 2 or 3 books on the subject

*she also found a good vet in our area, and is responsible for all the vet costs

*I told my daughter that she would have to pay me back, for the tank I bought her, every month in order to get to keep her snake

*she worked odd jobs arount the neighborhod, and with family and friends to earn the money she used to buy her animal (I M VERY proud of her)

*she has kept her room neat and clean for 4 months, WITHOUT me having to tell her, as one way of showing me how responsible she can and will be.

*she is aware that if this animal is not cared for it will die, and that will be a great loss to her. she has an appropriate amount of angst about doing a good job, and is continuing to ask Questions

in short, she has EARNED the right to have this very special animal in her life, and she knows both the neat and cool parts, as well as the other not so cool, or possibly daunting parts
