For those that slit your eggs. What day?

Thomas j May 15, 2006 11:37 AM

I kept telling myself I am not going to slit them that I was going to let them come out on there own. What day you you normally cut the eggs? I am at day 50 and I am excited to see if I got any pastels.

u still have 6 days of "normal" incubation time i would wait,no need in causing unnecessary drainage from the eggs for nothing leave them be at LEAST until a day or 2 after hatch date JMHO

It's generally accepted to be safe to cut them a few days early, but truthfully there is no reason to do it and it could cause harm. I only ever "open" and egg if a clutch has started to hatch and an egg or two still haven't pipped a day or two after all the rest.

What if there is only one egg in the clutch? Its on day 57.

I always slit the eggs AFTER the first egg pips. DO NOT SLIT EGGS BEFORE THE FIRST EGG PIPS. The hatchlings know when to hatch and it is much wiser to WAIT and not hurt the animals.

Thanks everyone I will try my best and wait. I am so excited. It is only gonna get worse. My second clutch is due to hatch a week after the first ones. I will cut one egg in that clutch it is shaped like a tear drop and has a hard spot on it.

If something works why change it. I've never killed a baby from opening up the egg. I've opened eggs on day 47 and they hatch fine. I open up all the eggs on day 52. It saves you having a baby drown from not being able to get out.

day 52....day 57....day what.?..when do I cut them?

cut after they slit it.......right?

.....

here's a clue..you cut it on day 52........you had temps at 87 and not 91 like some people...it is going to take 65 days for that poor little ball to be ready to come out......now you cut it on day 52....and 10 to 12 days later.....the egg has been opened and the baby comes out early and dries up and dies.......or the egg dries too much and the baby dies.....or etc etc etc..

you got 6 eggs let's say.....AFTER 3 or 4 cut their own way out....you may cut the rest....

and another thing I love is how people cut a 2 inch square hole in the egg and make a sun roof for the baby.....

cut a V and let the shell attatched.......

.......

now.......you 'all do what you want.....

and pkease everone..tells us when you kill babies........I really want to know.......

........60 days at 89 degrees......

Hey Thomas I also am at day 45 on two clutches of Spider Eggs . I would wait till atleast day 55 cause last year I cut an egg at day 45 and before one Pastel came out of the egg , it got little maggot looking things on it . It liked to have scared the hell out of us . I had to get someone to help me get them off . He came over and got the egg and washed it with warm water and it survived . I am never cutting my eggs early again . I will not be cutting them until atleast day 60 and I would not recommend it to you .Some times the babies take more time to absorb the Yolk .

hey Thomas

I cut my first two clutches(last season).
The first on day 53,and they didn't all come out until day 59./
Second clutch was cut on day 56,and again, they did not emerge until day 59(day 60 for the very last one)./They all survived, but i grew a few more grey hairs that week.

89.2F to 89.5F temp range

...and yes...JY did warn alot of us then too.
ok,i'm listening now! lol

So from now on,not until at least day 59.

...and no more sunroofs!
