Problems with Vermiculite...?

foxfeather May 15, 2006 05:54 PM

I have been going around town trying to find a place selling vermiculite, and have been met with nothing but dead ends. Places I bought it at before no longer are carrying it, and I guess I may have to purchase it online and have it shipped if this continues, I really needs some. I live in southern Minnesota and was told by a farm supply store that it has been 'outlawed' here.

I'm currently trying to look into this... but has anyone else been experiencing any problems like this? I know there was some hype awhile ago about vermiculite being infested with asbestos, but I thought that was one particular supplier and it has been cleared up?

Does anyone else have suggestions on what to use for incubation medium for ball eggs if vermiculite is literally not available?

Thank you kindly for your time.

We can still get it here in Michigan, but I do remember the abestos thing. If you can't find it try perlite. I use a mixture of vermiculite and perlite. But still would like to try the no substrate method

most nurseries still sell it near me. i know home depot by me doesn't sell it-due to fiune dust particlers being supposed cancer agents---only to long time exposure. im in ny and got it easily. iknow some people use perilite--but doesnt hold moisture as well.

I can get pretty large bags of it here in CT. Let me know if you would like me to ship some out to you. Thanks Erick
