female nosey be digging

crowntown May 15, 2006 06:07 PM

hey everybody, first time posting. I have a female nosey be, and have noticed it dwelling on the bottom of its cage. Does this mean its time for unfertile eggs, like what veileds do? I placed her in a bucket of sand last night just incase, and after 4 hours she had already dug a hole about 3 inches down to the bottom of the bucket and stopped. i figured it wasnt deep enoug, and put about 8 inches of sand in, but she wont dig again today. any ideas????

I give almost 20" to my female panthers, I find the eggs on the bottom each time. For the coming layings, I will be providing more.

when you say "sand" is it moist or dry? It must be a fine sand (like builder's or play sand) that is moist (not wet) so that it will hold a tunnel and not collapse on her. I find an even mix of coco-fiber (aka eco-earth, bed-a-beast) and the sand works well. As Will said, you need it deep and fairly wide. If she is not happy with the site she may become eggbound. Here is a technique to try:

thank you all for your suggestions. yes it is moist playsand, and i have tested to make sure it wnt collapse. she still wnt continue digging, so im just guna take her to the vet n make sure shes fine. a $250 panther is worth a $30 checkup

I don't think you mentioned her age. If she is over 6 months then yes, it is quite possible she is looking to lay a clutch - if she is digging in the sand it's for a reason . Does she look gravid? Do you weigh her regularly? She may just not be happy with the size of container. I kept a light on Luna's a bit warm during the day - it can get pretty cold in wet sdand at the bottom of a cage.

The vet may need to do an ultrasound so don't be surprised if it is more than $30 (gee, I can't walk into my vet's office for less than $40
