DEAD..... Have most of the Retic

nerd_inc May 15, 2006 07:04 PM

Keepers been eaten by their snakes????

Why is this subject forum sooooo DEAD???

Could it be we just need some new cool retics to drool over?

I heard Bob C hatched out something NEW!!!!

There are going to be some serious NEW RETIC MORPHS COMING in the next few years.

I see the retic market blowing up if the morph prices come down, there seems to be a flood of normals lately, but i think that this could be a good thing - hopefully it will inspire people to get a new morph in the future and breed them.

I am kind of hoping though that this doesn't lead to a lot of indiscriminate mixing with dwarf bloodlines.

I love retics with all my heart but i think the reason the retic market isnt booming is because of these snakes large size anyone who keeps retics knows how much it cost to house and feed these large snakes i see the super dwarf morphs being popular just not the giant ones like i love i would have a lot of the retic morphs if 1 i could afford them and 2 i could afford to feed and house that many giant snakes i already have 10 giant snakes and struggle to keep all of them fed and housed rats are cheap for the super dwarfs but rabbits are still very expensive

dear imridinghtelightening,

#1 - the retic market is booming, and has been a booming market since retics have been bred in captivity. although nothing compared to the ball python market... retics over the years have grown in popularity, and continue to do so.

#2 - retics will always stay big... no matter how much you breed into the dwarf or smaller dwarf locality your going to get snakes in the 10 ft range.

#3 - my biggest snake only cost me an average of $30 a month to feed... 1/3 of the year she is fasting, so it maybe a lot less.
in reality it cost very little when compared to keeping a dog for a pet.

#4 - i have 17 retics... 1/2 are mainland, and the other dwarf locality. i have no problems with caring for my animals. and i live in a large 2 bedroom apt.

#5 - when i get my super dwarfs i am going to make them more like my larger snakes by breeding them together.

#6 - i pay more money for rats than i do for rabbits... so really it costs me the same, or maybe less to feed one of my BIG females, than to feed one of your SMALL super dwarfs per month... lol!

now lets see some of those NEW morphs, i already saw the tiger golden child... what else is out there ??!!!!??

where do u get rabbits for so cheap? i pay just about nothing for my rats, and i have to prepare for my retics growth, which means finding cheap rabbits for him

bluemike May 16, 2006 05:27 PM

my problem is just the opposite - i can get rabbits for $5-6 dollars, but rats are $8.99 -> it's a crock , frozen is the only way

dollarthegreat May 16, 2006 05:46 PM

The worst part is, it more then likely only cost the breeder about 25-50 cents each rat. So where does all that 6-8 dollars mess come from? LOL

i dont have any super dwarf retics i like the large retics i have a female sulawesi im just saying that i think the super dwarfs are going to be popular right now my female sulawesi is only 6' in lenght but once she gets older i plan on spending at least $1000 on a cage for her so thats a major expense also i dont know where you guys are getting rabbits for $5-$6 at because i have been feeding my burms and african rock pythons rabbits and 5lbs rabbits are costing me $10 each $8 for 2lbs rabbits where rats are only costing me $1.54 each i actually started breeding my own rabbits recently to keep the cost down and i hate rodents if i could find rabbits cheaper i would buy them instead of breeding them

Some years back I rolled in a used mobilehome that had been slightly damaged by hurricane lily. We own lots of land so the space wasn't an issue. But I converted the relatively large mobilehome (16x80 feet) into an enormous rodentry building, as I call it. It was an incredibly cheap way to have a building intact with insulated walls, plumbing, electrical, AC, heating, etc, etc, etc. All I had to do was build in caging. In it I have rat, rabbit and mouse breeding systems. All the caging I made myself. All the water systems are gravity-flow, 1/4 inch tubing and brass valves that makes for an automatic water delivery system. It's all very self sufficient and not at all time consuming. I am currently running 75 female rabbits to 4 males, focusing on maintaining diverse bloodlines and never inbreeding. Each female has her own cage. We don't count the rats but there must be somewhere in the neighborhood of 1500 breeders at a ratio of 10 males to 100 females. If you want any pictures of my set up or any breeding tips that may make your rabbit breeding any easier I'd be glad to help you out. Just shoot me over an email at David_Beauchemin@highendherps.com and I'll answer promptly. When it comes right down to it the cost of my rats are about 25 cents for larges and rabbits are maybe 50 cents to a dollar for 5 pound plus, in terms of the cost of the feed. To maintain my rodentry systems that are extensive enough to feed over 200 boids it is only about 2 hours out of each day. Really quite cheap and easy. I urge all herpers to breed their own food animals if they have the time, space and means.
