snakes in flood

rhyion May 15, 2006 10:38 PM

i live in massachusetts, and catch racers, garters, waters, milks, and ribbon snakes at an area of vernal pools. There are a lot of rocks around the area that the snakes hide under. we recently got like 10 inches of rain which caused a lot of flooding. I was wondering if anyone knows how floods like this would affect snakes. would they all come out from under the rocks? or would they all scatter away from the area? or go in trees? would it be easier or harder to find snakes after an event like this?

thanks

where they go and how they survive is a mystery at best. Remember we are not just talking about snakes ( reptile wise that is ) but land turtles like box turtles, etc. After numerous flooding events at a certain location of my field observations in the panhandle of Florida and this being a peninsula, the reptiles are still there with standing flood waters lasting for days ! Some species of herps on this peninsula includes : snakes, lizards including fence lizards, skinks, glass lizard, etc, Florida Box turtles, possibly gopher torts, etc. ALL of these can't climb trees or whatever to get above flood waters. All of these can't tread water for days. While I know that some " chambered " animals of tunneling and having that tunnel having air pockets that flood waters don't flood up into, other reptiles don't. Mystery ?

Here is So.Cal when we have severe flooding you will find snakes on the beaches. They wash down the rivers, out into the ocean and then swim back to land. Yeah, herping on the beach in the middle of winter...picture that! I have only seen a few personally after a flood. A couple gophers and a diamond back. I have seen some pretty crazy pics of this though.
