What is a "blonde" cal king anyway?

waspinator421 May 15, 2006 11:19 PM

Is it some kind of hybrid morph? Or is it an actual pure California Kingsnake that the genes went berzerk?

Any info would be awesome.

Thanks!

i think u are referring t the snake in the classifieds... it's a mutation " Blue-eyed Blonde" not just Blonde... it's a type of hypomelanism in cali-kings!

Yeah, that's where I saw it. So, no obvious hybridizing (sp?) to get a "blonde" king? Thanks!

Here is a pic of a young hatchling that I got from Vivid Reptiles. Like everyone said, it is a form of hypomelanism.

Unfortunately, there are ads on K-snake for Blue-eyed Blondes THAT ARE NOT Blue-eyed Blondes at all.

i think i know which ads you're referring to when you say they are not blue-eyed blondes and i totally agree but the ad where i say "blonde cali king" the snake did look like a blue-eyed blonde in my personal opinion
link to ad: "Blue-eyed blonde?"

I caught one just like that in Santa Barbara, CA. I wish I had coined a name for it. Probably would have held more importance.

The "blue-eyed-blondes" came from a locale near San Diego.

All are a form of hypomelanism. I don't know why one type yields more validity than any other type. I guess "blue-eyed blondes" are compatible genetically with other "blue-eyed blondes" but not necessarily with other hypos. Plus the "blue-eyed blonde" strain is locality specific (or was).

zach_whitman May 16, 2006 04:07 PM

The reason for the distinction between different hypomelanistic forms is that they are not all compatible. Two snakes that look like they same hypo could produce normal babies het for both types. THe blue eyed blonds are one type and being acurate about what type of hypo you have is the only way to reproduce the trait. Ones bought directly from vivid are locality specific to san diego county.

Kerby... May 16, 2006 09:47 PM

That's why I got my BEBs directly from VIVID Reptiles. So I know what I have.

waspinator421 May 16, 2006 06:06 PM

Yes, that is the snake I am considering. So, you think this is a true "blue-eyed blonde"? So any babies from this guy would be het for blue-eyed blonde?

Hey Zenny and Kerby,
Do you guys think this one is a 'BLUE EYED BLONDE'?????

I can see a definite blue iris around a deep red pupil on this one.

Do the lavenders that are out there have such blue and red eyes Kerby? I know we have had this conversation in the past, but I still am curious to know if lavenders and blondes are the same. I am breeding this male to a banded amel female this year to make double hets.......Wish them luck...

I know that I had questioned the BEBs in the past...until I got a pair from VIVID last year...and I must admit defeat//LOL

There is definitely something different from them than the other Lavenders. They are all obviously hypomelanistics. I am betting that there are probably 5-7 different hypomelanistics out there. Only through breeding will confirm this.

Yours look like striped BEB's. The color and eyes look the same. Now if we can only produce a patternless BEB, I mean not "IF", but when....

Kerby...

Kerby... May 16, 2006 09:46 PM

Agreed, only I'm not sure what an adult BEB should look like? I'm not sure how much they change from babies to adults.

Here is a pic of an adult "Lavender" from Great Valley Serpentarium. It might be an adult BEB. I will find out in a couple of years as I bred him to a few other cal kings.

Very lovely snake! love that pure white on him!

i think this whole hypo thing in cali kings should be looked into some more!

your snake (hypo) and the "blue-eyed blondes" look rather similar! yours just looked like it came from b/w lineage and the one in the ad looks like it came from brown and yellow lineage??

i think i'll get a few cali kings in a few... just as a nice addition to the collection... again very nice snake!

**your snake (hypo) and the "blue-eyed blondes" look rather similar! yours just looked like it came from b/w lineage and the one in the ad looks like it came from brown and yellow lineage??**

Exactly, we have already seen how different albinos look depending upon if they were black & white or brown & yellow as regulars...so I'm sure there would be some variance in the BEBs even though they can be the same gene. We have already seen the Lavender vary.

I did breed this male to: an Albino High Yellow; a Mendota (hypermelanistic); an Albino Aberrant; and to a Ghost.

So I will have quite a few double hets this year...and hopefully in a couple of years cal kings that display both traits of the combos mentioned.

What is the difference between a blue eyed blonde and a lavander?
I couldn't see the eye color on the pic of the BEB posted below so I don't know if they're truly blue or not. My lavendar Cali-kings are the same color as the BEB pic posted but they have ruby eyes.
