What would be the outcome.....?

drasticplastic May 16, 2006 04:42 PM

ok...I'm still learning boa genetics and the Punnett square just confuses me so I figured I'd ask the experts. If I'm not mistaken, an albino bred with a hypo will give all DH sunglows right? (please correct me if I'm wrong) what would I get if I crossed a DH sunglow with an albino? using the square I'm getting different results everytime I do it so I know it's me screwing up. I'll get it.....someday.

a hypo x albino = 50% dh sunglows and 50% normal het for albino.

a dh sunglow x albino = 25% sunglow 25% albino 25% dh sunglow 25% normal hets

Albino x Hypo
1/2 Hypo heterozygous albino (Double Het. Sunglow)
1/2 Heterozygous albino

Dh Sunglow x Albino
1/4 Sunglow
1/4 Hypo Heterozygous Albino
1/4 Albino
1/4 Heterozygous Albino

I still have a while before I can breed my albino girl, but which would be the better path to take.

Anery
DH Sunglow
Hypo
Het Albino
Albino

This is all I can think of right now that would work best with what I have. I don't know...let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

Well, of course if you had the funds, a dh sunglow would be better than any single trait alone, whether it be a plain albino or hypo. With that your one step further up the chain because you would only be making dh's if you bred her to a hypo and then would have to wait for them to grow up and breed them to get your sunglows. Albino to albino is doable but not reccommended by most due to weakness of the gene and even then you would only get albinos. Albino to het is better genetically than albino to albino but then you would get a mix of albinos and hets. With the dh sunglow to your albino, you would get a nice mixture but the main prize in the package is the sunglow. Again, its what you can afford. Ideally, we could all just buy sunglows outright but that aint happening with me anytime soon=) so im going wiht poss. dh's to my albino and hoping they prove out. sorry to ramble on. hope this helps.... I would go with a DH Sunglow to pair with your Albino. Reason being is because the animals will not only be most valuable, but in my opinion would be the best looking.

Additionally if you were interested in making a snow you could go with the Anery, which would result in 100% het Snow offspring. To avoid inbreeding (not such a great idea to do especially working with the albino gene) you could then trade for another 100% het Snow. You could pottentially create a Snow in about 6 years.
