What X What = What???

JohnZ Jul 31, 2003 12:55 AM

OK, i am kinda new to this and have maybe a stupid question. Maybe a question asked before, but i have not seen it, so here goes.

I see all these really great morphs and now seems like a lot of new morphs. I see like Caramel Glows and so on, and have no idea how they are made. Like with the Caramel Glow, an ad on this site has DH caramel Glow and says dad was a Caramel Albino and mom a Yellow Ghost. So those make a DH Caramel Glow??? I think...

See, so what i am asking is, can someone or many people who know, add what they know so i can start a list of what i need and how i need to breed it to make what? Like if i get these DH Caramel Glow, when 1.1 are breed, will i get a Caramel Glow?

So its a chain of events,

Caramel Albino X Yellow Ghost = DH Caramel Glow X DH Caramel Glow = Caramel Glow...

So then what got the Caramel Albino? See, i want to kinda know what gets what and makes what and so on. Can anyone HELP???

Thank you... JAZ

Probably the best place to go to read up on where morphs came from and what was used to make designer morphs is NERD's website

www.newenglandreptile.com

They have a ball python morph section. It is cool to look at.

The carmel albino is not a DH, it is just like the albino or pied, etc... same for the ghost, but breed 2 together and then breed the DHs together and get what you are looking for.

Yes, but ... (see below).

I've never heard of Caramel Glow. However, from what you and Krystal have written, it sounds like Caramel Glow is a combination of caramel albino and ghost. AFAIK, both mutants are recessive to their respective normal alternative genes.

The standard results of a cross of two DH for recessive mutants is (statistically) as follows:

9/16 normal looking (various heterozygotes)
3/16 caramel albino (many, but not all, also heterozygous ghost)
3/16 ghost (many, but not all, also heterozygous caramel albino)
1/16 caramel albino, ghost (Caramel Glow)

That 1/16 caramel glow doesn't look like good odds to me. Especially when ball pythons average around 6 eggs per clutch. It means that you will get at least one caramel glow, but there is no telling how long you will have to wait. You might get lucky in the first year, or it might take four or five years. Herpers need glacial patience. 8-)
