Oh my God, CeCe!

ladyania May 16, 2006 09:57 PM

I have had CeCe, a green water dragon for about two years now. She has been very healthy and I have never had a problem with her, untill she started not eating a few months ago. Well, she laid two eggs about a month ago and continued the anorexia. She had a good layer of fat, so no one was concerned about that, I waited for another clutch. She remained very active and looked good. Last week on wednesday she began laying eggs and laid 7 or 8, the last one on Saturday. I could not palpate another egg, but she still did not resume eating. By then she looked significantly skinnier, but not at all emaciated. Yesterday I noticed she was lethargic, and I noticed her drinking in a very tired pose. Today I got home from work and found her sleeping, which is not normal for her during the day. I took her out of her home and she could barely open her eyes! Her pupils looked weird and her eyes are sunken. Her mouth had not wet watery saliva but almost mucousy slime. She displays some energy and is able to walk or resist being moved from her perch, but not like normal. I decided to hydrate her and had her bite on the stick from a q-tip while I slowly emptied syringes of water into her mouth (one cc per 2 min). She just stood on my leg and didn't resist and took about 7-8 cc's of water over 20 minutes. Now I put her in one of her favourite spots near the heater in a water bowl I call her spa, where she soaks for hours. She has a multi level home with a pool at the bottom, but on the top she has a small bowl which is close to a heater and stays warm. The water 80-85 F. I have included a picture of her home and of her normally. I have to add that she had good color, no deformities, the only symptom are the lethargy and the sunken eyes. So does anyone have any ideas? She will be going to the vet tomorrow afternoon and I will be keeping a close eye on her during the night. Please let me know what you think, I love this lizard!

Well, all I can say is take her to the vet. Im sure that you have added a little more calcium in her diet? I believe that the mortality rate is highest in a pregnant females situation, although I dont want to scare you with that. Im hoping for the best for you, let us know how the vet visit went.

I would definitely take her to a vet. That is by far your best option.

Whew! Seems like she was just recovering from her prolonged gravid state! She laid two more eggs ( all in all since april she laid about 7 pairs of eggs, several days to weeks apart) and after two weeks of me daily hydrating her, she finally showed interest in food on her own yesterday. Today I was able to tong feed her, which was part of our previous routine and she responded well. She is still not as active as before and definitely thinner, but she is doing a lot better. Besides hydrating her, every other day I would make her "worm soup" and take guts from worms and mix them with water, calcium and vitamin drops, and have her drink some of that. A good way I found to "force feed" her was to hold her on my lap and have her bite on a qtip stick (paper) while I slowly dripped the water or soup into her mouth, giving her several breaks to swallow, breathe and rest. I am so glad she is doing better. Is egg laying always so stressfull??
Best of luck to everyone!
