A question about hognoses

slancin May 17, 2006 02:14 PM

Ok here is the deal about a year ago I inherited my brothers burmese python. And my wife hates snakes. Despite the fact he is big sweety. He freaks my wife out, with due cause he is big enough to eat my children. So I am shipping him to my sister-in-law. My 5 year old son in heart broken that his mom is getting rid of the snake. Not wanting to ruin our son's life she is going to let a "small" snake come live in our house.
(Ok so I was heart broken also about giveing away my brothers snake, and getting new snake helps fill the void a little.)
I Don't want the run of the mill corn snake. I was wandering how hognose's do as pets for kids? Now I will be providing primary care for the snake. But my kids really like snakes and will be part of its care. How are Hognose's about being handled? And do they cope with regular human contact well? Or are they a "watch form a distance snake" Any info you can provide will be helpfull.
Thanks
-Scott

I have a 12 year old daughter and a five year old son....they both LOVE hognoses. Their first snakes where Eastern hoggies ( they get a little bigger than the westerns). They are wonderful pets with LOTS of personality. Easy to hold, and the only bites I have ever heard of were because of feeding errors by the owners. Great little snakes. I warn you though, they are addictive and it may be hard to stop at one!
