"Collecting" trip tonight

billstevenson May 17, 2006 03:03 PM

My Partner and I will be heading out by Inyokern / Ridgecrest (SoCal) this PM. Temps are in high 90's with a pronounced cloud cover. Mid 80's by 2000 hrs. Hope the clouds provide cover for the moon and humidity that desert snakes dig. We won't take anything (except an adult Lyresnake, should we get that lucky) but photos. I'm still using film, so pics won't be posted necessarily, but I'll report on our total encounters tomorrow. This trip has potential...

...but here's what we saw. Before dusk, a young gopher snake and a pair of red racers copulating. At sundown, another gopher snake. After dark, a sidewinder and a shovel-nosed snake (Chionactis). Later a very pretty long-nose snake, another shovel-nose and a large glossy. Very few DOR's but hoards of prey items; mice, k-rats and rabbits of all dimensions! I think its still a bit early for that elevation. Should be HOT in June.
