turning off the heat

janome May 17, 2006 03:19 PM

hello. i live in the phoexnix, az area. its getting hot here now. with the evap running its around 80 in the house. does anyone turn off their UTH and/ or lights this time of year? just seems like they are not needed now for supplemental heating. when it gets more unbearable we will turn on the a/c to around 76ish but for now the evap works pretty good.
just was wondering...thanks.

I have 4 corns, Jungle carpet python, honduran milk, and a soloman island groud boa. all housed in their own aquariums. some have UTH and some just lighting for heat.

Do you have thermostats hooked up? Thermostats will keep the cage at the right temp no matter what the ambient temps do so you don't have to worry one bit. If the temp in the room gets too hot, the thermostat won't provide additional heat to the snake cage. Could get expensive with a half dozen cages to control though.

But I really can't say what you should do without a thermostat. The Jungle carpet python will probably still need a hot spot above 80 degrees, so you wouldn't want to shut off his heat completely. But the solomon island boa might not need much above 80. It all depends. Just watch the temps with thermometers and adjust accordingly.

Hey there. I live in Glendale, AZ. Boy, do I know exactly what you're talking about! I already turned on my AC, but it is at 80*. It took me a long time to get all the temps right again, but I unplugged all of my UTH's and changed the wattage of all my basking bulbs. For instance, some that needed 75 watt bulbs in the winter now have 25 watts. My corns have 15 watt bulbs for their basking spots on all of their tanks. I also have two ceiling fans on medium speed at all times to help with ventilation.
