Cypruss Mulch

Tortuga May 17, 2006 06:45 PM

Anyone know where to find this in CA at some of the box stores? I've checked K-mart,Wal-Mart,Lowe's with no luck. I've also checked with local hardscape yards with no luck. I know petco has it in a small bag for like $10, but I need a bunch for an outdoor enclosure.

Thanks

Did you ask anyone in the garden sections of the box stores or plant nurseries? Any store of any size in this area carries pallets of the stuff.
If all else fails, move to the South East.
The move probably wouldn't be practical for you but neither would having the stuff shipped to you.
Do you have access to alder mulch or something similar? I know some people who use the mulch from tree trimming companies. In this area, most of the trees are oaks, elms, cottonwoods - very little pines or other trees with volatile oils.

I asked and looked at the stores I've been through. I'll keep checking. Thanks.

Did you check for locally available mulches?
Some believe cypress mulch has slight anti-septic properties - I don't know if that is true or not. But I bet most hardwood mulches from non-volatile oil trees would work. No Eucalyptus. No pine. No Cedar. I would guess no redwood.

What kind of torts do you need the mulch for?

To my knowledge cypress mulch is not sold in CA, at least southern CA where I live. I buy mine in large bags from thatpetplace.com. Not cheap but it's great for torts that needs substrate that hold moisture, like Manouria, I. elongata, or redfoot/yellowfoot.
