Croc Skinks

melahela30 May 17, 2006 09:47 PM

I'm planning on getting a pair of crocodile skinks. I'm keeping them in a 20 gallon tank with 3/5 land and 2/5 water. Im going to have some real plants in it along with a few rocks and little huts (upside down coconuts with doors). Im going to use unfertilized soil as a substrate and Im going to have a basking lamp one end above one of the rocks. In the water Im goign to have either a Beta fish or some little feeder gold fish with a floating lillipad. Does this setup sound alright? Would the fish be ok with the skinks (I dont care if the skinks kill them or whatever). Will I need to make a hide or will the coconut huts be sufficient? Does the basking light need to provide UV rays? Will the skinks eat dead crickets and meal worms (I have a tegu so I have a lot of dead crickets and meal worms already dusted off with supplements). Can/will they eat pinkies? If I put some feeder fish in the water will the skinks eat them? Will it be good for them? Sorry for making this so long and having so many questions, but answers or responses would help me out a lot.
Thanks, Sean

I have a pair as well, they are super easy to care for, but I will warn you in advance they are very secretive, and prefer dark undercovering. I keep my specimens in a rubber made sweater box, on paper towel, with several hiding spots and no live plants and they have thrived.
They do require calcium gut loaded prey items, I dont recomend crickets as they are predatory and may go after your skinks eyes. I use mealworms and wild caught arthropods, like pill bugs, and the ocasional wax worm. I guess you could feed pinkies, but why? Mice are not representive of what they would ever eat in a natural diet. From what I have read of their wild diet they relish snails, so if you could establish a breeding colony of wild caught pesticide free snails you would be set.
Basking is not necessary as long as your ambient temps never fall below 72 degrees or above 82, extreme temps cause letahrgy.
These guys are fascintaing but do not tame well, if you can appreciate their secretive nature, and enjoy them when you clean their enclosure or raise their young you will have a rewarding experience. Leopard Geckos they are not.
They are fast footed as well, and drop their tails if handled roughly. One interesting thing they do is an alarm cry. Its some what similiar to the bark call a Leopard Gecko makes. As always my friend follow the KISS method, keep it simple stupid. Keep on herping.
