I think most of us can agree that PetCo and PetsMart are at best mediocre and usually not even that, when it comes to thier care of animals (for you not in the US, they're chain petshops). Yet, if you look at who's fronting the protest and whatnot against them....it's PETA--I actually tracked it down today. These same nuts want to ban our critters entirely, so it seems if you go ahead and side with them, you're dancing with the devil, and if you buy from the the chain guys, you're lining his pockets. Fun, no? And most of the proposed legislation was really inept--the bill in Calif. requiring them to provide "good info" on whatever animals they sale, with no stipulations or standards for whatever good info is...seems like a wonderfull catch .22. Too bad there aren't actually any pet lovers (vs. animal rights nuts) who publicly oppose such crappy pet care as those two practice, yet don't mind pet ownership....*sigh*.

I think I'm going to throw my dice in with PIJAC... they're a pet store organization, but they're the only lobby out there protecting our rights right now. I'd rather eat a dollar in a salad than give it to anyone who might even think about giving it to an 'animal rights' organization. New legislation is the LAST thing we need, and I don't think it's going to clean up crappy pet stores. Although what also needs cleaned up is crappy wholesalers and importers, who are the first half of the equation.

Public awareness just needs to be raised. The public needs to know that these are beautiful worthy pets. And they ARE pets. They are loved by many people, and they are not just purchased by showoffs and children. That's the first step. Anti pet laws are not going to do that and neither is PETA. I don't know if PIJAC is or not. Maybe us hobbyists have to do it one person at a time.
