I am about to purchase some red-eyed tree frogs and plan on using damp newspaper as the substrate. As fogs can absorb threw thier skin, I was wondering if the ink would pose any threat to the frogs.

I would use paper towel, easy to clean and change. I don't really know if the newspaper would pose a threat to your frog or not, but they aren't exactly good at holding humidity. If you want something simple, use paper towel.

Get some coco coir or paper towels.. The paper towels will work, but a bit more difficult. The coco coir will need to be changed less often (depending on you set up your tank, maybe never) and will hold humidity better, plus.. if you want live plants, they will grow fine in it. Paper towels need to be changed regularly do to the frogs waste and also have a tendancy to become saturated.. and funky..
