I killed Laura's eggs (bairdi)

draybar May 18, 2006 06:30 PM

I didn't want to say anything until I was sure, but I killed six of her seven eggs and possibly all seven.
A couple of weeks ago I was checking all my eggs and like an idiot, droped the egg container, with her eggs, on the floor.
I was hoping they would survive but six have turned brown, grown mold and collapsed. The seventh isn't as bad but it isn't looking good.
Man I was pissed. You could have heard me cursing myself three blocks away.
My wife came running in thinking there was an intuder or something.
I have about 100 corn eggs but I was more excited about my two bairdi clutches then anything. Rosie's seven eggs are still looking great and should be hatching in a couple of weeks but it just sucks to know I killed Laura's.
oh well thanks for letting me vent a little.

Sorry to hear about that Jimmy. Atleast you can look forward to her producing some nice eggs for years to come. And if your emory rats produce for you in the future, I'd love to see a photo comparison of an Emoryi egg, bairdi egg, and a corn egg lined up together. That would be a neat shot.

I know how you feel, Jim. Try not to kick yourself too hard; we all make mistakes that might have been avoided. Salvage what you can and move on.

thanks guys.
At least I do have Rosie's eggs and Laura will be able to produce for many years to come.
If the one egg does hatch you can bet you @$$ I will be keeping that little baby.

Steve,
It will be a couple of years before I can do the emoryi-corn-bairdi egg comparrison but it will definitely be interesting.
I would bet that the emoryi eggs will be somewhere in-between the bairdi and corn eggs in size.
The bairdi eggs are so much larger then the corn eggs.
It's almost like chicken to quail eggs...lol

Sorry to hear of your loss, Jimmy, but be happy you'll have another try next year. My silver emory female is egg bound and I'm probably going to lose her. The three eggs she did deliver are huge, as big as your Baird's, I'm sure. I'm in a bad mood too.
