garter foam while eating

rhyion May 18, 2006 07:36 PM

i saw an eastern garter up here in massachusetts today. i was just watching her then she dives in to a hole. when she comes out shes got a spotted salamander in her mouth. the salamander wrapped its tail around her neck so it took a little while for her to swallow it. but while it was chewing on it i saw drops of white liquid coming from the snakes mouth. anyone know what this is or ever seen this before? it looked to be similar to their musk, but obviously wasnt musk.

It's probably a mix of secretions from the salamanders skin and the garterse salive. I have seen it before. Slugs secrete a lot of slime when the garters are eating them also.
