Has anyone thogut of using the Home Depot concree tubs in a rack. Just wondering. If you used one of the big ones. Might be like a freedom breeder. For snakes if you used a screen top.

There HAS been discussion before, but I didnt really pay much attention to it. I think folks might have used them for under the cage bedding areas for burrowing snakes and such. For like an "underground" kind of thing.

Here is the link to the thread at the bottom of the page. Suprisingly this has come up 3 times on this page. My recommendation stands I think the Argee mixing tubs at Home Depot are great for Rodents not for snakes, maybe lizards.

I used some severa lyrs ago like bighurt mentioned , i buitl a large cage and had two 4" holes in the bottom of the cage that lead to two below ground hides. These were nice due to the fact beleive it or not i had a 9 1/2 ft female and a 7 1/2 8 ft male BREEEEEEEED in one of these tubs ( BOAS ) Ill look for old pics not sure i have them any longer it was on old HDrive. As a rack im not sure how they would work for like a sliding deal like FB but when used like a rat rack they work nicely for Balls ( Built my parner one in raleigh for his own stuff using these ) thought they had a preferated HDPE top on them VS screen top on them so no nose rubs had to be worried with. far as i know hes still useing them today and still breeding ball pythons in them ill askem next time we talk and try t get pics of them . But basically imagine a rat rack with a preferated top on them VS wire like for rats

I was just thinking that one of the larger ones would be the same size as a freedom breeder tray. And that I can work with wood much easier than plastic. Maybe I will have to take a try at it and see. I would live freedom breeder, but I am a poor herp owner. Todd
Todd,
You could always make drawers from wood and line them with the plastic of your choice. It could be as cheap as vinyl film at 26 cents per sq. ft. You could also include an acrylic front.
Then just use some full-extension drawer guides and you're in business.
I think to do this you would need to make the drawers the size of a box that is just not available on the market as it will be more expensive.
How big are these concrete mixing tubs?

I think the largest ones I have are 2x4 which would be perfet for my Womas. I love the freedom breeder. But at 300 a level I can't swing that right now. I was just thinking that If you built bracing underneah and got a hard and airey top. Like pegboard. The shelves would slide out on there own and then the snake would be perfect. Kind of like building a frame and using the tub as an insert. I use these tubs for my rat racks. I was thinking about the 2x3 tubs for a ball python rack with the pegboard or using plastic pegboard or even a think plastic coated mesh and a top. Just an idea.

Oh yeah, I used to have one of those really large mixing tubs for tortises. Forgot all about that. One "problem" with them is that they have that really bulky lip around the top and the slides slope a lot. So you end up with very little floor area.
I'm going on memory here, but I don't think the floor area of the largest mixing tub is enough space for a Woma.
But if they are big enough, I think they could be made to work. I would reinforce the lip around the top somehow, maybe with PVC pipe, and have it slide on a track of some sort. I would also have the boxes slide in length-wise if at all possible.

Depending on the adult size alot of friends use 4x2. But soem go smalelr on the males and a little larger on the female. That is why I was thinking of using them as an inset. I also got the freedom breeder. I can buy levels that will stack. Eventually going into the 48 inch wider drawer models. Still thinking about the tubs. Maybe I just have to prove something to myslef that I can do it.
Sorry, I was not clear. I'm not questioning the 4x2 footprint for Womas, I'm questing whether or not those largest mixing tubs provide that much space. With the heavily sloping sides and the thick rim around the top the floor area is nowhere near what the outside dimensions are. This is true of a lot of boxes but is especially true with those mixing tubs.
But maybe there is a different tub out nowadays or maybe I just don't remember correctly.
I really think the Freedom Breeder concept would be fairly easy to build with wood.

Okay so I found a company called pegmaster. They produce plastic pegboard. I think that would work better than the screen or the pegboard. I might actually use some of the iris tubes, but I will let you know. Todd
mixing tubs from HD. They are 2'X3'.
I love them. They seem to last forever.
