newbie with some really stupid questions

shelley7950 May 19, 2006 10:32 AM

Hi all--I work in an animal shelter and we had someone turn in a young Ball Python and a young carpet python because her son wasn't taking care of them...I'm not sure exactly what species the carpet python is...it looks like a dark, muddy Irian Jia with quite a bit of purple iridescence...are Bredle's and Irian Jia's the same thing? What's a scrub python? Any way other than probing to sex them?...the snake's between 3' and 4' long...any guess as to probable age?...Thanks so much...

another way to check gener is by "popping". I'd recommend someone doing it, ONLY if they are expreienced. Or, you can have a blood test. No idea on what it's cost ya. Think they check the horomones or something like that. A lady at a vet office once tolf me about it. Told me a price, but i can't remember...

Morelia Bredli, Morelia spilota variegata (Irian Jaya or West Papuan) and Morelia amethistina (scrubs), are all different species within the Morelia genus.

Here is a pic of a bredli: http://gallery.pethobbyist.com/index.php?photo=277724&size=big&user=84111

A pic of an Irian Jaya:http://gallery.pethobbyist.com/index.php?photo=277444&size=big&user=84111

Thanks--that's exactly what I was looking for...he's definitely an Irian Jaya, although a fairly ugly one (sigh)...He was cold and thin when he came in, but now that he's set up in a 20 long with branches, an UTH and a basking lamp he's feeling much better and ate 3 mice in rapid succession..I think he would have eaten more, but I didn't want to risk a regurg...he's currently curled up in a little knot up in his branches sleeping it off...thanks again guys...
