Turtles killed for ornaments?

LisaOKC May 19, 2006 12:29 PM

I went to my daughter's science class today where a
local naturalist was giving a demonstration on snakes.

I spoke with him afterward and mentioned my interest
in box turtles. His eyes lit up and he said "I'm glad
to see someone who appreciates box turtles!"

Anyway, he told me of a concern he had that
native americans might still be killing box
turtles to make ornaments out of them.

Does anyone know if that is true. I've seen
ornaments that I assumed were old, such as the
ones where box turtle shells are made into
rattles and strapped around the legs as part of
a ceremonial dance costume.

The thought that turtles might still be killed for
this really makes me ill. Anyone know anything about
this?

I have heard about this being done.. like a century ago.. I haven't heard that it's still something done today.
I HOPE NOT!
Maybe a google search would tell you if it's still happening.
I just hope NOT!
