pernads May 19, 2006 03:55 PM

Hello all, I have had my male Carpet Chameleon for alomost 2 months, and his eyes are bulging out of his head, literally. What is this a sign of??

I have noticed where his eye ball is, the eye torrent has flatened out, almost making his pupil recessed in is eye. He is still very active, and he eats and drinks well.

Ill try to gets some pictures of his eyes.

Thanks for all your help..

OK, this is a really bad picture, but it shows his bulging eyes. Why are his eyes like this??

Thanks,

Greg

Take him to a vet immediately. My first chameleon, chameleo gracilis, had this problem on one eye. It went away, then the next day she died.

So the vet said it could be 1 of 3 things. An infection, a lack of Vitamin A, or a blocked nasal passage. I got ointment in case its an infection. He told me to use Nekton Rep for vitamin A. Ill take him back to the vet on Friday. Wish my little buddy good luck!!!

Vitamin A seems to be such a tricky one! Wouldn't the vet want to knwo for sure about Vit A so you don't overdo it?

Regardless, I sure hope it gets figured out and all is well! I'll be thinking good thoughts for him!!

I hope he gets better!!! I will be thinking about him. I know how it feels as do most of the people here when your little ones are ill.

Thanks Everyone!!!

Lele, is there a way if the vet can find out if his Vit. A levels are where they are supossed to be?? Can this be determined with bloodwork. Im taking him back on Friday for another checkup.

I have given him 3 treatments of the antibiotic, and I have noticed that his eyes are more round, they look a little shallower, and his eyes are a lot more alert. He has been very active today, and doesn't really mind when I put the antibiotics on his eye. He is a very freindly chameleon, unlike his lady friend.

I am the wrong person to ask. Kinyonga (and a few others)was helpful in explaining it all to me when Luna had some neck swelling. I find it quite confusing. I am not sure if they can check actual levels (not sure how much it would fluctuate, but I would think the vet would know what he's doing. Here is an article on Vit A in chams - and reinforces that confusion! I just know that too much can be toxic. Any Vitamin that is not water soluble (Vit A & E)
can build up - and then of course there are problems with deficiencies.

If you are going back to the vet I would start a new thread here and get some other folks input.
