empty 10 gallon hex.

otis07 May 20, 2006 09:55 AM

I have an empty 10 gallon hex. tank and I would like to put some kind of darts in it. I haven't had much experience w/ darts, but I do have one. Its a bastimentos pumilio and he's doing really well. I was thinking about imitarors or leucs, any suggestions? If it makes a difference I would make it a "great stuff" background w/ broms...to have more vertical space.

One of the most recent frogs, inexpensive ones at that, I've acquired, has been the Phyllobates lugubris. These are about the tiniest of any adult frog I've ever seen, but apparently they require more territory for their size. I have my pair in a very little glass vivarium for the duration-- only 2 1/2 gallons with a glass top, but planted with a background and tiny plants and mosses. I should think that a 10 gallon hex would suit them just fine. Although they are supposed to like leaf litter to live in, mine are out and about all of the time and climb. I don't have any extended experience with them yet, but they are potentially interesting to keep, and are among those who care for eggs and transport tadpoles to waterways. You might consider them.

Thanks for the idea, I also have a 2.5 gallon empty, are yours "comfortable" with thats size permentaly? If not thats not a problem cause I have a bunch of empty tanks... I like the live bearing frogs though, so I am seriously considering it. Where did you get yours? if you don't mind me asking. Thanks for the help!

Hey Patty:

Do you have a picture? I've not even heard of the frogs you have before. Are they even smaller then Imitators? How can I learn more about them? Where did you get yours from?

Thanks-

Maggie

Maggie, they are indeed smaller than adult imitators. They are smaller than imitator froglets, in fact. They look a lot like P. vitattus in coloration, mostly black with orange stripes on either side of their backs, but I will try to get some pictures of them soon. They are still in their tiny, 2.5 gallon, but complicated and mini-planted nursery tank. I'm finding it hard to imagine they will ever need anything larger, but apparently they do. They were cheap, at $35.00 per frog, and I got them from Black Jungle at the Arizona Frog Day April 18, and they are still no larger over a month later.
